The Perth twitter cycling posse minus…. well most Perth cyclists met up for a hills ride this morning. 6am, cold, dark, tired, but ready to venture out into the Darlings. @Madrapper, @durx and myself set out on a route I planned yesterday. It looked great on LCD and I even drove it to check the [...]

No matter how many times I see the dolphins swimming in the Swan river in Perth when I am out cycling, they never fail to stop me in my tracks. With my new iPhone’s video taking capability this time I managed to capture them. I actually stayed and watched for about 5 minutes along with [...]

I’ve not updated for a while but thought I’d just post a few things that have been going on. Work’s been taking most all my time over the last week. I managed to cycle for 4 days last week. I got soaked twice a day every day which introduced new challenges. I’ve never cycled through [...]

I spent this weekend continuing my support for OpenStreetMap. This really is a fantastic community effort. After scanning around Perth I noticed there were lots of suburbs either unmapped or where the major roads were mapped, but unnamed.
A total of 5 hours of time over the weekend and now
North Perth – Mapped and all roads [...]

It appears the MotionX elevation update is definitely an iPhone issue and not MotionX after more testing. Also it does appear that the iPhone accuracy gets better when you’re out in the clear. Mapybe the iPhone’s satellite reception isn’t that great!?
During yesterday’s ride out to the hills, I recorded this elevation profile with MotionX and [...]

OK, so further testing. I drove around the block 3 times tonight recording the route with 3 different applications.
- MotionX
- RubiTrack for iPhone
- iMapMyRide
For some reason iMapMyRides export to GPX dropped the elevation information so I don’t have that to share. The graphs below show RubiTrack and MotionX. Both are different which I didn’t expect [...]

My Garmin seemed to come to life when playing around yesterday, so this morning I thought I’d
A. See if it would work for a whole commute
B. Compare it’s data to that of MotionX
The results are interesting, but reinforce my concerns that the elevation from MotionX is complete rubbish. I’ll email the developer to see if [...]

My Garmin Edge 305 has been playing up more often of late. On Monday it was a pain in the ass turning itself off 12 times on a 1 ride. It turns itself off on any bumpy road and I believe from searching around that it’s quite a common problem people face and all to [...]
